Single Pitch Award, tips & advice for passing your assessment

Before assessment

Ensure you can do the following:

1.  Put a harness on correctly

2.  Tie in with a figure of 8 knot & a bowline

3.  Lead grade severe easily & protect yourself

4.  Set up a belay at the top of a climb

5.  Belay both a leader and second

6.  Lower another climber

7.  Set up a personal abseil

8.  Set up a group abseil

9.  Set up several bottom rope climbs

10. Be able to use different belay devices including Gri Gri

11. Run a session using games

12. Solve simple problems ie crag fast climber

13. Be able to equalise slings & rigging rope

14. Teach basic climbing skills

Ensure your logbook is neat and tidy and you have the required number of climbs and supervisory sessions. You should be able to show you have visited a variety of crags and include at least 3 different rock types. You will also need climbing wall experience a first aid certificate and your personal profile page filled in. Have a knowledge of climbing history and the area where the assessment is taking place.

On assessment

Arrive looking the part. Ensure your kit is in good condition and works. Always keep safe at the cliff edge. If you don't understand the question ask for it to be repeated. If you make a mistake don't worry, assessments are training as well. Don't be afraid to put your point of view across.

 

 

Although my climbing experience and knowledge wasn't as rounded as the other attendees I felt very welcome and Tony played a huge part in that. I was always thoroughly supported......
